HIGHLIGHTS

Mount Rinjani, 3726 meters, is an active stratovolcano located on the island of Lombok, Indonesia. It stands as the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and is a prominent feature of the island's landscape. The mountain is part of the Mount Rinjani National Park, which spans 41,330 hectares and includes the picturesque Segara Anak crater lake. Rinjani is revered by the local Sasak and Balinese people, who consider it sacred, and its stunning scenery attracts trekkers from around the world.

The summit trek offers several routes, varying in difficulty and scenery. The most popular route begins from the village of Senaru, which takes you through lush rainforests, savannahs, and rugged volcanic terrain. Another well-known starting point is Sembalun, favored for its shorter, though steeper, approach. The trek typically includes a stop at the Segara Anak crater lake, where trekkers can soak in the natural hot springs or enjoy the view of the active Barujari cone.

Mount Rinjani is home to several significant geological features, including the Segara Anak lake, which lies at 2000 meters above sea level and is often considered the heart of the volcano. The lake is about 200 meters deep and supports a variety of fish species. Another feature is the Barujari, a small active cone within the crater, which has erupted several times in recent years.

The best time to climb Mount Rinjani is during the dry season, from April to October. During this period, the weather is generally stable, offering clear views and a safer trekking experience. However, the weather can still be unpredictable, with occasional rainfall even during the dry months. The trek to the summit of Mount Rinjani is challenging but rewarding, offering panoramic views of the island and beyond, making it a must-do for any serious trekker.

Grading and Fitness Requirements

Trek grading:

The Mt. Rinjani trek involves established hiking routes with some steep ascents and descents, rocky terrain, and volcanic scree. The trek is challenging but manageable for those with a moderate level of trekking experience.

Fitness:

A good level of fitness is required. You should be capable of trekking for several days, carrying a backpack weighing between 6-8kg. The terrain involves continuous elevation changes, typically ranging between 600m to 3726m. While prior trekking experience is beneficial, it is not mandatory for those in good physical condition.
